POPERING HOMMEL

West of Ypres (Ieper), the town of Poperinge is renowned for its hop cultivation, supplying 80% of Belgium's native hops. It houses the national hop museum and is affectionately known as "hop city" or "hoppe stad" in Dutch. Every three years, a lively hop festival and parade take place in September. The local beer, Hommel, takes its name from the West Flanders dialect for "hops."
